Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, “was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!”
Ok, so I am posting this one a day late (and with only 5 entries); I was really busy and didn't get to it yesterday.
Young Characters I'd Like to Revisit as Adults
Gilda Joyce from the series by Jennifer Allison
"Ever since her father died, quirky Gilda Joyce has been working hard to sharpen her psychic skills. She's determined to communicate with spirits from the Other Side and become a crack investigator of spooky, twisted mysteries. After wrangling an invitation to visit relatives in San Francisco, Gilda discovers that her dreary, tight-lipped uncle and his strange, delicate daughter need her help to uncover the terrible family secret that has a tortured ghost stalking their home."
This series has been kind of hit or miss for me, with my favorite being the most recent two. I would love to see how the quirky & managing Gilda turns out.
Igraine the Brave by Cornelia Funke
"Igraine, who turns 12 tomorrow, dreams of becoming a famous knight. But today, like most days, life at the family castle remains...rather boring.
Until the nefarious nephew of the baroness next door shows up. Greedy Osmund's got a dastardly plan to capture Pimpernel Castle and steal the singing magic books that belong to Igraine's mom and dad. Complicating matters, on the eve of the siege her parents misspeak a spell and turn themselves into pigs! (How inconvenient.)"
Does she ever go through a girly teenage phase? Who is her first crush? Is she just as interesting as an adult?
Johnny Maxwell from the Trilogy by Terry Pratchett
"As the mighty alien fleet from the very latest computer game thunders across the computer screen, Johnny prepares to blow them into the usual million pieces. And they send him a message: We surrender. They're not supposed to do that! They're supposed to die. And computer joysticks don't have 'Don't Fire' buttons. But it's only a game... isn't it. Isn't it?"
It is a sad thing that we know for certain there will never be another book in this series, with him at any age. It would be interesting to see what he might be like as an adult. Could he continue to be less attached to reality than the rest of us without turning out like poor Mrs. Tachyon?
Maia Drazhar (aka Emperor Edrehasivar VII) from The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison
"The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three sons in line for the throne are killed in an "accident," he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving rightful heir."
I would especially like to see Maia as a father. I would also like to see what happens to his young nieces and nephews.
Theodosia Elizabeth Throckmorton (you have to say it with exasperation) from the series by RL LaFevers
"Theodosia Throckmorton has her hands full at the Museum of Legends and Antiquities in London. Her father may be head curator, but it is Theo and only Theo who is able to see all the black magic and ancient curses that still cling to the artifacts in the museum. Sneaking behind her fathers back, Theo uses old, nearly forgotten Egyptian magic to remove the curses and protect her father and the rest of the museum employees from the ancient, sinister forces that lurk in the museums dark hallways"
Even the well intentioned adults sometimes frustrate me in this one. But it was the Victorian Era, when children were to be seen & not heard (and most well-to-do parents shipped theirs off to boarding school). I really want to see what Theodosia could do once she was unfettered by the limitations of her age.
